BRANSON FIREFIGHTERS RAISE $16,000 FOR THE MDA

The City of Branson Firefighters have presented a check to the Muscular Dystrophy Association for $16,000 representing their fundraising efforts to assist those affected by neuromuscular disease. For 63 year firefighters across the nation have participated in the “Fill the Boot” campaign.

“The Fill the Boot Campaign is simply amazing,” stated Jerry Bear, Executive Director of the MDA. “Firefighters work hard to organize successful and safe Fill the Boot Campaigns.” Over one million people in the United States are affected by the 43 forms of neuromuscular diseases that MDA helps support including ALS, better known as Lout Gehrig’s Disease.

“Our firefighters have participated in the Fill the Boot Campaign since 1982 joining firefighters around the region and nation to support those served by the MDA,” stated Fire Chief Ted Martin. “It really is a team effort. Fire Marshal Dennis Brunner leads the coin bank program where loose change is gathered throughout the year at local businesses who place these collection banks near their cash resisters. Captain Josh Boehm helps organize the firefighters who staff two Fill the Boot events hosted by Tanger Mall,” added Chief Martin.

The MDA uses these funds nationally in their research efforts to find a cure and to take care of kids and adults from day one. Locally, fundraising such as the Fill the Boot Campaign helps fund a local MDA Care Center located at Mercy Hospital in Springfield and send kids from 6-17 living with muscular dystrophy to a week-long barrier-free MDA summer camp at Camp Windermere at Lake of the Ozarks. “Chief Martin has attended serving as a volunteer Camp Buddy for 10 years helping with critical patients care needs,” added Bear.

“We really appreciate the support of our community, businesses, and visitors who help support our fundraising efforts through the coin bank program and Fill the Boot Campaign. Each dollar raised makes a positive impact on those affected by muscular dystrophy and ALS,” stated Martin.
