Branson police are warning all business leaders to be on alert after two local businesses have fallen prey to the same type of fraudulent scam in the past two years.
A local retail business reported Tuesday that an employee received a call from a number that appeared to be from their corporate office. The caller stated a large amount of counterfeit bills had been taken in by the local store and needed to be exchanged. The employee was instructed to take the daily deposit and purchase money cards and read the card numbers to the caller.
Police are not releasing the amount of money the business lost or the name of the business because it is an open investigation.
This is the second business in Branson to fall prey to this particular scam. In the Fall of 2017, another business reported the same scam. However, this fraud is not unique to Branson. Many other businesses across Ozarks have been a victim of it as well.
Business leaders are encouraged to discuss this fraud with their employees and report any such fraud to police.
