April 14, 2017, 11:00 AM - 12:00 PM @ Lakeside Forest Wilderness Area Trail
Branson Parks & Recreation invites the public to celebrate a piece of history at the dedication of the new pavilion with covered porch swing at the site of the former Lyle Owen Homestead along the trail of Lakeside Forest Wilderness Area.
The historic Owen Homestead was lost in a fire on September 24, 2015. The porch features columns of rock from the original homestead that was built in 1911. Signage around the covered porch swing reminds visitors about the area and the sustainable lifestyle of Lyle Owen along with information about the Old Soldier’s Cave. The covered swing invites all to enjoy the tranquil setting overlooking Lake Taneycomo.
In 1998, the City of Branson purchased the first 130 acres of land comprising the Lakeside Forest Wilderness Area, and the remaining 7.4 acres in 2011 comprising the homestead and surrounding area. The purchase included a commitment to the Owen family preserve the land as a park, highlighting nature trails, green space and rich heritage
April 15, 2017, 11:00 AM - 12:00 PM @ Branson Recycling Center
The City of Branson invites the public to join Mayor Karen Best at the Monarch Butterfly Garden Dedication on Saturday, April 15, 2017 at 11:00AM at the Branson Recycle Center, 601 Compton Drive across from the Branson Community Center.
A free butterfly milkweed plant will be available to those citizens who attend the ceremony, provided as a courtesy by the Missouri Department of Conservation.
Monarch butterfly populations have declined by 90% in the past two decades, and what used to be an annual migration of billions of butterflies through Branson dwindled to almost nothing in 2016. We are grateful for more than 500 milkweed plants that have been provided by the Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) for the Branson region. A drawing will be held for butterfly-themed prizes including a "Monarch Butterfly Garden in a Box"!
